You’ve heard it all before; planning a wedding is stressful. You’ll be required to balance budgets, balance what you both want, what your parents want, all while planning a wedding which can at times seem like a full-time job. With all of this to worry about, you may have noticed subtle or not-so subtle changes in your body. Many newly engaged couples report having poor eating habits (too much celebrating) or even a lack of appetite (stress or worry about the wedding) affecting their health.
No matter how long your engagement is, it’s not too early to begin a 5-point health plan to help look your best in your wedding photos.
Diet. We don’t mean diets of the crash variety like eating only grapefruit and cabbage until your wedding day. By diet we mean that you should sit down and take an honest assessment of what you are putting into your body every day. The old adage says that if you want to look your best, you need to feel your best, and its still good advice. Start charting what you eat and how you feel afterward. You can do this in a variety of ways with apps available on your phone, or you can go old school and just write it in a journal. If you’re in a rut, consider visiting a dietician or health coach. Bonus: these good habits can carry you throughout your life and you may feel better than ever, thanks to your engagement!
Exercise. You’ve got to move it to lose it, and if you need some motivation you might find it in a big white dress. No matter what your goals are, a set workout routine will not only propel you towards your goal, it will help keep stress in check. It can even be fun to work out together! When you get closer to the wedding it’s easy to get mired in the details and taking some time with each other not talking about the wedding and sweating it out can feel really good.
Hair/Skin Care. Facials, pedicures and deep conditioners are not just for the ladies anymore! A regular skin and hair care regime 6 months before the wedding can make a big difference in your appearance in your wedding photos. Along with this; water. Lots and lots of water! Hydrated skin gives you that dewy glow and will reduce puffiness around the jaw line and eyes.
Sleep. 7-8 hours of sleep a night has been proven to increase mental clarity, reduce insulin levels and make you a happier person. Get in the habit of going to bed and waking at the same time at least 3 months before your wedding. This regular sleep cycle will leave you calmer, more rested and less stressed. Stress shows in photos!
Communication. While of course we always advocate for you to communicate with your fiancé, in this instance we are speaking of communication with your wedding photographers. If you’re worried about your appearance, whether it’s the shape of your nose or that fact that your fiancé is significantly shorter than you please communicate that to the wedding photographers before the wedding day. Never feel that your concerns are petty, or embarrassing and never assume that your photographer will correct your flaws by “fixing it in Photoshop” after the wedding.
A skilled wedding photographer such as an ISPWP photographer has many tools in their arsenal to pose and light you in ways that flatter, and will make you feel great when you are being photographed. Just like a good marriage has chemistry and communication, you want that with your wedding photographer. Make sure you review their work carefully and that you love their photos! By looking your best and keeping lines of communications open you’ll have wedding photos that will amaze and delight you for years to come.
